Book review: The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Short, sweet, smart, hopeful and an invitation to joy and connection. 118 pages of service and sharing. What could be better?

Book review; Love, Africa by Jeffrey Gettleman

Love, Africa by Jeffrey Gettleman. This memoir by a Pulitzer winning journalist on why he loves Africa despite being the person who rushed in to report for the NYTimes of the worst atrocities and famine. It’s a true love story told with eyes wide open. Not for the squeamish. Fully recommend.

Book review: The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhorn. Thank you to Ilaiane Lorenz for the recommendation. Based on a real midwife in Maine in the late 1700’s. Birth, death, murder, family, and a whole lot of snow and ice. A great thread pulls you through with a couple you can’t help but admire and adore.

Book review of North to Home by Crissi McDonald. I’m obsessed with orca, so I had buy in from the cover. About 60 pages in, I saw a romance story coming but I adored the setting in the San Juan Islands so I stayed. And boy am I glad I did! Fantasy, romance, scenery, mysticism all woven masterfully! Brava!

Book Review: Never Burn Your Moving Boxes by Jolyn Young. I liked the author’s honesty and her determination. I can easily picture the landscape and the people. Nice to hear an authentic voice that is simple and bold.

Book review. Bewilderment by Richard Powers. Five stars! Brilliant characters, wonderful pacing, beautiful language. I couldn’t put it down. Then again, I was on a long flight…

Book review: Yellowface by R.F. Kuang The author covers a lot of territory about cancel culture, the publishing business, etc. In the end, it’s an entertaining book with a lot to say. A good choice for a book club discussion as different people will have completely different takes.

Book review of The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. It took me some time to sink into the story but I’m glad I stuck with it and her ending warmed my heart.

Greetings from my sabbatical. I have news. Today, at 2pm local time, I submitted a manuscript to a publisher! I had a loose goal to see what would happen if left to my own devices and it seems that the creative muse visited. I’ve been writing like mad since I got on the plane. Sending love from Argentina!

Thus begins our adventures. Joell has traveled deep into the south, to the land of horses, mountains, grassy fields and the sea. What stories would she share? What treasured memories would she bring home?
